COAST TO COAST - NORTH ROUTE
Your riding ability
On our long distance rides we will be travelling many miles a day in the saddle, riding up and down hills and over rough terrain so you must be capable of riding in a balanced manner for your horses sake! Our horses health and happiness is always a priority to us and because of the long days in the saddle, we require all riders to be competent in riding with a light seat (i.e posting the trot and light seat in canter) to minimise stress on the horses back. We will be crossing rivers, galloping along beaches and may need to jump small natural obstacles, like ditches or fallen trees - nothing too big, but you need to be a capable rider and able to control a horse at speed. It is also important that you are practised in leading a horse over difficult terrain as there may be times when this is necessary. We require all our riders to be at a walk/trot/canter level.
Get to know a little about the trails and our minimum age/experience requirments

Jan & Graham O'Neill
Owners
Highlands Unbridled has been Jan’s dream for 10 years. Having had a love of the countryside and nature since childhood, she loves to get out and experience it up close! Because of this, Jan decided that Trail Riding is what she wanted to do and she embarked on a long process of research and training, culminating in the formation of Highlands Unbridled with her partner Graham.
Graham worked in social care for many years, specialising in supporting people with learning disabilities. He enjoys hill walking and wild camping, canoeing and Scottish dancing as well as traditional Scottish music. His fiddle playing is awful but it is good fun! Born in Scotland, he grew up in the West country so don’t let his accent fool you – he is very proudly Scottish! His family roots are in Sutherland and he has a keen interest in Scottish history, especially in the ’45 rebellion and subsequently the Highland Clearances. He is also fluent in French.
Dominique Mills
Manager and Long Distance Ride Leader
Dominique has worked with horses all over the world, from the wilds of Mongolia to leading endurance trail rides in Transylvania, even teaching kids to ride in Romania and Norway!
She originally studied as a photographer and worked in advertising before leaving Australia for 5 years of whirlwind travel across Central Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. She now works as a ride leader on the long distance rides and is loving the opportunity to explore, work and live in the Scottish highlands. Her photography and advertising skills have been really handy for redeveloping the website and managing the Highlands Unbridled social media.
Dominique enjoys liberty riding, teaching tricks, historical re-enactment and exploring the hills with her Friesian mare and her two dogs, Selkie and Rua. She is an avid animal lover and has cats, dogs, chickens, donkeys, geese and ducks.
